Inspiration: David Carson

From time to time we will post little articles about artists we admire, respect and have been inspired by. Artists who seem to share a similar “Boring ethos” that is unwavering and truly unique. These articles aren’t meant as all encompassing overviews or biographies of these artists, but more as little snapshots to share what motivates us as creatives and a company.

David Carson is primarily known as a graphic designer. He is most recognized for his innovative magazine design, and use of experimental typography. Carson was the art director of Transworld Skateboarding magazine in 1984, and remained there until 1988, helping to give the magazine a distinctive look. By the end of his tenure there he had started to develop his signature style, using “dirty” type and non-mainstream photographic techniques. He was also the art director for the magazine Ray Gun, in which he employed much of the typographic and layout approach for which he is now known. In particular, his widely imitated aesthetic defined the so-called “grunge typography” era of the 1990s. In 1995, Carson left Ray Gun to found his own studio, David Carson Design, in New York City. He has since designed album covers for Nine Inch Nails, ads for Audi, products for Quiksilver, campaigns for Western Union amongst many, many other brands. His style is still fresh and inspiring in a marketing landscape that loves grids. We love how his imagery and type “flows” seemingly effortlessly across the pages he designs.

However, did you know; Mr. Carson is also an avid surfer. He has been riding waves most of his life. He lives a pretty lo-tech life considering his clients and chosen discipline. He has that “west coast/go with the flow” vibe about his work, and his ethos is clearly inspired by all things surf. A great little short film about how this very serious hobby of his blends with his life (and work) can be viewed here
